Pictures from the Past

SUNDAY BEST. “I’ve always loved this early-1900s photo, even though I don’t know most of the men pictured,” notes Barbara Carnes-Cowden of Coldwater, Michigan. “The men are all dressed in their fancy clothes and sporting hats and cigars, possibly for some sort of celebration or men’s organization. Warren Carnes (Uncle Sonny) is the one seated on the chair, near the center of the photo, with the mischievous smile that I still remember. He was a farmer near Richmond, Ohio, for most of his life.”

EUROPEAN FAMILY? “I found this picture at Gilley’s Antique Mall in Plainfield, Indiana,” says Patty Wilhoite of Danville. “The little girl’s chair tells me it was probably taken in the 1880s. It’s a precious picture. Note the shoes and dresses.” The names and ages of the children barely visible on the back of the photo are, clockwise from top, Asehr, 13; Aola, 5; Hermoll, 2; and Alie, 6.

FORDS IN HIS FUTURE. “I’m sitting on the right fender of my 1934 Ford convertible that I bought in 1941 for $140,” tells Richard Bate of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. “The other 1934 Ford convertible was owned by my friend Karl ‘Dutch’ Theiroff. When Dutch was drafted in ’42, a friend bought his car. When the friend was drafted, I bought the car, although I had to sell mine. When I was drafted, I gave the car to my brother, who sold it to a junk dealer when he was drafted. My original Ford also ended up in the same junkyard when the owner enlisted. The end of two wonderful Fords.”
